4 Skills to gain this year
Not all women will agree with the notion of “miss independent” or perhaps the idea that women need to exist as an independent entity to our opposite sex. I believe we are meant to not only coexist, but to also be able to complement one another. As partners, we should be able to find strengths in one another that come in handy in respect to the weakness that is in the other. We can’t all be strong at all time, it’s exhausting, as well as unnecessary. This is not to say that we should be entitled or even expectant. It is each individual’s responsibility to improve themselves enough to be of value to other. You are to be of value to your spouse, your friends and society at large. There are some very simple things that we should all endeavour to learn or just improve this year.
Women do not solely belong in the kitchen! Let’s get that out of the way right now. However it is very important that we do not follow that narrative too far, so much such that we do not gain these skills. Just because you can cook does not mean that you are to be confined to the kitchen. For the most part, women are the ones who raise children. This is one of the skills that comes handy when you are a parent. No one wants their kids eating “takeout” meals too often. Besides, if you can cook, you’ll also eat well. Take action now, visit someone who can cook and learn one or two of their signature dishes. Why not take a cooking class? A quick search will show you a few that are within reasonable distance to you. Take advantage of these. There are also some great app with good beginner recipes, I’ve used all the cooks.
With the constant growth of the internet and all the applications and devices that come with it, coding is becoming a more and more sought after skill. It is never too late to start learning. The skill range from creating websites to building very complex software and so on. It is easier than most people realise, to start. There are various websites that offer courses that can get you started. I will list a few below. Being able to code does not mean a career change. It means you can employ these new skills in whatever field you are in. You may build or maintain your own website, which would save you a lot of money, which can of course be used in other areas. Moreover, coding can allow you to make some money on the side, and perhaps even work from home.
I have been a witness to too many opportunities being missed because of a lack of such and such a language. The more languages you speak, the better suited you will be for your marketplace, whatever it is that you do. In this global village that we live in, it is easier to cast your net much wider. Why confine your skillset to one language? Some very useful languages to learn include German, French, Portuguese and Mandarin. These are quite widely spoken around the world. There is also study that shows that people who are multilingual have a lower risk of dementia! It’s a win, win. Duolingo is a perfect place to start! Get the app on the Playstore or App Store. It’s free.
There are so many challenging and disheartening things that we all see in the media every day. A lot of people are discouraged. It will go a long way if we individually took it upon ourselves to encourage the next person. You never know when you may also be in need of encouragement.
